FAMILY PARTNERS PROGRAM

ICC's Cross Care Team visits Xinxin's home.
In a remote part of Hunan Province, nearly two hours from their home base in Changsha, our new Cross Care Team #3 set out for their first day of work. Local community leaders had heard of our Family Partners Program and reached out to us about a family in desperate need of support.
While two of the Cross Care Team members are veterans (having worked in the Changsha Care Center), even they felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of struggles facing this desperately poor family.
Though the grandfather runs a small farm, he struggles to provide for the family of six. His six-year-old granddaughter Xinxin was diagnosed with cerebral atrophy and has delayed physical and mental development. Xinxin’s mother is disabled and her father has a physical disability that makes it difficult for him to help the grandfather in the fields. Barely surviving, the family doesn’t have many possessions—or even a phone.
When ICC social worker Liu Jing stepped into the home, her heart broke at the family’s dire situation. Xinxin has difficulty walking and communicating. Because they live in a remote area, she hasn’t received the therapy or special education she so desperately needs. “The innocence and strength I saw in Xinxin’s eyes helped me understand that our work is a sacred mission,” Liu Jing says.

Immediately following their visit to Xinxin’s family, the Cross Care Team began making plans to provide the assistance this family needs—including therapy, special education and support for little Xinxin. Your support is making a lasting, tangible impact in the lives of Xinxin and her family.
